After stagnating for a while, BeReal’s adding new features to its app, the latest being ‘RealPeople’ a “curated timeline of the world’s most interesting people” including but not limited to top artists, athletes and activists. The idea is to “try and eliminate society’s notion that public figures live in an alternate, filtered universe”.
The feature can be accessed from the Discovery tab within the app. At launch, users can react, hide or report posts. The app is also letting people suggest themselves or someone else for the new timeline using a form, however, we don’t know if BeReal’s already got people lined up for its upcoming feed.
RealPeople is currently only launching in the UK and BeReal expects it to take a couple of days before the new feed can be fully populated. That said, the feature is coming to the rest of the world very soon.
BeReal is very clear that RealPeople isn’t about “influencing, amassing likes or comments or promoting brands” stating that users won’t see “perfect photoshopped pictures, product recommendations, or ads disguised as posts”. It’s clear that the feature is trying its best to blend in with the app’s theme of ensuring that users show their raw, unedited lives online and to “show that it’s okay to BeReal no matter who you are”.
After being quite popular in 2022, BeReal’s growth has slowed down a bit, mostly due to the app simply not giving the users much to do other than post a ‘real’ picture of whatever it is they’re doing with their lives at any random point in their day.
However, recently the platform has caught on and is adding new features, including the ability to take more than one photo a day, to keep users engaged. However, that’s easier said than done, especially when the app’s entire idea is to keep users more in real life than on their phone screens.
