Why are your work orders not working?
Work orders are absolutely critical once your fortress reaches a certain population as they easily help produce enough items to satisfy demand quickly and help with automation. However, there are certain things that need to be kept in mind when issuing work orders.
First up, you need a manager to process work orders so that they reach the dwarves. However, if your work orders still aren’t getting approved, there might be several reasons behind this.
- Your manager is busy with other tasks.
- The population is higher than 20, processing work orders requires the manager to be in an office.
How to fix this?
Here are three fixes you can try out.
Give your manager an office
The first thing you need to do, especially if your fortress’ population is higher than 20, is to create an office with a chair and table and assign it specifically to the manager. As mentioned above, higher population fortresses require managers to sign off work orders from inside an office and hence it becomes a requirement.
Free up your manager
Another important thing to keep in mind is the number of tasks your manager is handling. If he/she is too busy, it can take a long time for them to come around and process work orders. This can be mitigated by either assigning fewer tasks to your manager or appointing multiple managers to handle different tasks.
Close taverns
Just like in the real world, having too many distractions around can decrease the population’s productivity. You can mitigate this by closing taverns so that your dwarves start going back to work. This might anger some of your population but will get them back to work.
