EC and its usage
We will discuss EC and its usage in Chromebook, as the solution we will talk about will reset the EC, so knowing the functions and its connection with the Chromebook is important.
Embedded controllers, often called ECs, are tiny but vital microcontrollers found in computers, especially laptops. They have a range of responsibilities, including system management tasks like power control, temperature regulation, battery charging, and keyboard input.
Additionally, ECs handle low-speed peripherals like touchpads and keyboards to ensure they work seamlessly with the computer. They play a significant role in interfacing with hardware components, contributing to the computer’s overall performance and efficiency. These controllers also enhance synchronisation among system components by executing specific code when needed, which can lead to improved processing speed.
Chrome OS and EC
If you’re using a Chromebook, it also has an EC. Chrome OS, the operating system for Chromebooks, works hand in hand with the EC. The Chrome OS project has special software for these ECs, ensuring they work smoothly with the computer.

How to fix the issue?
There are two ways to go about this, which might take some time.
Method 1: One of the things you can do to reset the EC is to strip it off of power — directly from the source and the Chromebook’s battery. So, discharge the Chromebook and leave it like that for about five minutes. Then power it back on, and the EC should be reset.
Method 2: Another simple but strange fix is to turn your Chromebook on and off around 25 times. While you may not need all 25, this process can help resolve certain problems. Here’s how to do it:
- Step 1: Turn on your Chromebook.
- Step 2: Wait for at least 30 seconds without doing anything.
- Step 3: Power off your Chromebook completely (don’t just close the lid).
- Step 4: Repeat the process as needed.
This power cycling can be a handy trick to solve certain Chromebook issues.
