Not being able to watch your favourite movies and TV shows after a long day at work can be pretty frustrating. And as well-polished as modern OTT platforms are, they still have their issues.Â
In this article, we’re going over a few solutions that you can try out when should HBO Max act up when you’re trying to stream content.
The app keeps crashing
We’ve all dealt with streaming apps crashing out of the blue. As annoying as it is, there are several solutions to the problem.
First up, try restarting your device. Restarting any device, whether it’s an Android, iOS device, or a computer, can fix many seemingly random issues that appear out of nowhere. This is also a good chance to check whether or not you’re using the latest version of the app. Do keep in mind that HBO Max is not the same as HBO Go or HBO Now, and updating either of them doesn’t automatically update HBO Max.Â
Another thing you can try out is clearing out the app’s cache. Caches store temporary files that the app may or may not use. If there are any corrupt files in the cache or any other old data that may be interfering with the app, it can cause such crashes.
Lastly, if nothing else works, try removing the app from your device and reinstalling it all over again. Reinstalling an app can give it a fresh start that might be able to kickstart things.Â

No sound
You can also have sound issues from the app where it basically converts whatever it is you’re trying to watch into a silent movie, which isn’t as enjoyable, especially in 2021.Â
The first thing you should do is try streaming another show or movie to check if the issue lies with a show and not your app or device. If you have audio on other shows, contact HBO Max using their Feedback Forum to get the issue sorted.Â
If there’s no audio all across the app, check your audio levels on the media player, followed by the device you’re using to stream. If you’re streaming from a TV or computer and have speakers plugged in, checking the audio levels on the actual speakers themselves is a good idea as well.
If you’re on a smartphone instead, try plugging in headphones to see if you get audio, that is, if you do have a headphone jack. Also, turn off the Bluetooth on your device if your audio is being re-routed to another device.Â

Buffering issues
The most common cause of buffering issues is slow internet or low network bandwidth and, in some cases, the device’s available memory.Â
First up, check your internet speeds to make sure they’re fast enough for the app to work. Then, restart your router if you notice slow internet speeds. Another way to deal with this issue is to ask everyone else on the WiFi or the network, in general, to pause whatever it is they’re doing for a bit.Â
If you’re using a TV or computer to stream, try plugging in an ethernet cord straight from your router instead of using WiFi. Even in 2021, wired internet is faster than WiFi.
Streaming on too many devices
Depending on your subscription plan, HBO Max allows streaming on a limited number of devices simultaneously. If you’re going over that limit, the app won’t work.Â
Head over to your profile and click on the Manage Devices option. It’ll show you all the devices your account is currently being used with. From here, you’ll have options to either stop streaming or log out of said devices. Try getting the devices under the limit your subscription allows, and you should be good to go.Â

HBO Max error code 321
There are no official fixes for this error code from HBO, but the most likely cause for this is your internet connection. First, check your connection to make sure that it’s working fine.
If you’re on WiFi, check to make sure that you have a strong signal and an active internet connection. If you’re using mobile data instead, check to see if you’ve got good network coverage and make sure that mobile data is, in fact, enabled.Â
Another likely cause could be your location. Currently, HBO Max is not allowed in all countries, so accessing the service from an unavailable location can also trigger the issue. A VPN will not be able to get you out of the situation, unfortunately.Â
Lastly, it’s likely that the HBO Max service is currently facing an outage in your area. Check DownDetector or IsTheServiceDown to see if HBO Max is up and if it isn’t, sit back and wait until HBO sorts the issue out. It’s also a good idea to check and see if you have the latest version of the app.
HBO Max error code 100 and 420
These errors are most likely triggered when you’re trying to access the service from a location it isn’t available, or you’re using a VPN or both.Â
If you’re running a VPN and live in the US, turning it off will most likely fix the issue for you. However, if you’re in a region that the service isn’t available yet, you won’t be able to stream anything, as the platform has the ability to detect whether you’re using a VPN.Â
Another likely cause for the error codes is either a service outage or high traffic in your region. These factors aren’t in your control either, so it’s best to sit back and let HBO figure the issue out, which can take a while at times.Â
