Adding video chapters using YouTube Studio
If you’re looking to make just about any change to your uploaded videos, you’re going to have to go through Youtube Studio. Adding chapters is actually quite a simple task with Youtube introducing automatic chapter in addition to manually adding them in for more control.
Manually adding Youtube chapters
Here’s how you can manually add chapters to your videos.
Step 1: Head over to your Channel dashboard in Youtube Studio and click the Content button on the sidebar.
Step 2: Find the video you want to add chapters to and click the pencil icon underneath to make changes.
Step 3: Now add your chapters into the description box starting with the 00:00 time stamp and keep adding subsequent timestamps with the chapter name. Click Save when you’re done.
Your chapters will show up as soon as you add them, although it might take up to 24 hours in some cases.
Automatically adding Youtube chapters
If you don’t want the time-consuming work of having to type in your own timestamps, Youtube Studio has an auto-add feature for chapters as well.
Step 1: Head over to your Channel dashboard in Youtube Studio and click the Content button on the sidebar.
Step 2: Find the video you want to add chapters to and click the pencil icon underneath to make changes.
Step 3: Click Show more at the bottom of the page.
Step 4: Under Automatic chapters, enable the Allow automatic chapters and key moments checkbox.
Note that since this feature is AI-powered, it isn’t perfect and won’t be as precise as specifying your own chapters.

Adding chapters from the YouTube Studio app
In case you’re using the Youtube Studio app, you can add your chapters the same way you did in the browser.
Adding manual chapters in the YouTube Studio app
Here’s how to add manual chapters in the Youtube Studio app.
- Open the Youtube Studio app and tap the video you want to edit.
- Tap the pencil icon in the top-right.
- Tap the video description.
- Add the time stamps as you did on the web.
Save your changes once you’re done and the chapters should appear on your Youtube video.
Adding automatic chapters in the YouTube Studio app
Unfortunately, you can’t add automatic chapters in the Youtube Studio app. However, if you’ve enabled the option on the web, automatic chapters should appear on every subsequent upload.
