It now features over 1.5 billion monthly active users and ranks third amongst the most used social networks today. Being such an integral part of our everyday lives, we mustn’t lose our messages or data at any point in time. How to backup and restore WhatsApp data (Android)?

  • Once you’re on the Home page in the app, hit the three vertical dot option in the top right-hand corner, and in the menu that pops up, and tap on Settings from the dropdown menu.
  • Now tap on Chats and Chat backup on the next page.
  • You will now see a green coloured button labelled Back-Up, tap on that to start the backup.

WhatsApp will start backing up data by default to your phone’s internal storage. However, if you are logged in with your Google account on your device, then you will get the option to create a backup to your Google Drive. This is particularly useful when you’re installing WhatsApp on a new device. You can select Backup to Google Drive option and then choose your account to continue with the process.

If you want to restore the backup on a new smartphone, log in to it using the same email as the one where you backed the data in the steps above, and install and open the WhatsApp app. Once you’ve signed in, WhatsApp will show you a prompt, saying it has detected a backup. Now tap Restore and select the file from the options shown. Your messages and data will now start restoring.
