How to delete your IRCTC account?

Indian Railways is one of the biggest employers in the world and also operates one of the largest train ticket booking website and app, through its subsidiary, IRCTC (Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation).

Founded in September 1999 under the patronage of the Ministry of Railways, IRCTC supports the Indian Railways with over half a million tickets booked every day. While it remains one of the most convenient ways to get yourself a rail ticket in no time, the site remains buggy and so does its app for Android and iOS.

If you don’t think you’ll be using your current IRCTC account for ticket bookings in the future, or merely want to switch to a new account, you might want to delete the current one. Well, the catch is that there is no direct way to do so — much like Dream 11, Oyo, PhonePe, Ola, Freecharge and Myntra, among others — but here are a few workarounds that can help you delete your IRCTC account in a few simple steps.

Delete IRCTC account by contacting support

As mentioned above, there is no direct way to delete your IRCTC account. Going to your profile or account section doesn’t lead you to a point where you can delete your account with a click of a button. However, you can still request IRCTC to do so on your behalf.

To delete your IRCTC account, send them an email at care@irctc.co.in. You can create your own message, or also use the template below to add to your email.

Subject: Delete my IRCTC account

Message:

Hello,

I would like to delete my IRCTC account. Kindly guide me through the process. Following are the basic details to identify my IRCTC account as well as to contact me in case you need any more details.

Name: <Your Name>
Username: <Login Username>
Email address: <Registered email address>
Phone number: <Registered phone number>

Thank you.

Remember to send the email only via the email address that you’ve registered with IRCTC; this will make the process faster. Also, keep your registered phone number handy too, incase the support staff ask for verification.

If this doesn’t help, you can also contact IRCTC on 0755-6610661 (Hindi) or 0755-4090600 (English).

If you would like to send them a written note to delete your IRCTC account, you can post it at the following address.

Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation Ltd.,
B-148, 11th Floor, Statesman House,
Barakhamba Road, New Delhi 110001

Delete IRCTC account by updating profile

While the method above should get the work done, if your requests aren’t met with a response and you’re unable to delete the IRCTC account, you can update your profile to reflect incorrect information, which should eventually lead your IRCTC profile to be delete automatically.

If you’re logged in through your PC, click on the Account option from the list at the top. Then from the dropdown menu click on My Profile > Update Profile.

If you’re logged in through the IRCTC app, tap on the My Account tab at the bottom of the screen, then on My Profile. On the next page, tap on the Edit button to the top-right of the page.

Once you’re on your profile, edit the phone number, email ID and your address to remove the IRCTC account from under your name.

Note that you can’t edit your phone number or email ID if you did so in the last 30 days. Once you’ve edited your contact information, IRCTC will likely try to verify them and on failing to do so might deactivate or delete your account permanently.

Once the phone number and email ID are no longer registered to the current IRCTC account that you own, you can create a new IRCTC account using the same details.
