How to loop on Audacity?

Audacity is a wonderful, open-source and free to use software for recording audio. The software has all the basic tools and utilities one would need to perform basic trims and apply a few settings.

Now one of the few audio edits you can rather easily achieve in Audacity is looping. It’s quite simple to do, all it takes is a few clicks and you’re done. The end result can also be quite good depending on just how accurate you were.

In this article, we’re going to take a look at how you can loop audio in Audacity.

Looping audio in Audacity

Before we get started, keep in mind that loops tend to work better with mono audio. So if you have a stereo track but mono would suffice, you can convert your stereo track to mono by going to Tracks > Mix > Mix Stereo down to Mono.

Step 1: Place your cursor at the waveform where you want the loop to begin.

Step 2: Drag the cursor all the way over to the waveform where you want the loop to end.

Ideally, the starting and finishing waveform should be constant in wave size or at least similar in nature. Doing this will avoid a rather abrupt starting and ending to your loop.

Step 4: You can test listen to your loop by using Loop Play. Simply press Shift + Space on your keyboard.

Now if you’re looking to use this loop inside of Audacity, you can simply copy-paste the selection anywhere you like. Although a more convenient way of doing the same would be to use the Repeat function by going to Effect > Repeat.

Step 5: If you’re looking to export the loop, simply head over to File > Export > Export Selected Audio…
