There are certain situations in people’s lives where they lose a remote or their remote stops working; in such situations, you can try unpairing your Fire TV Stick remote. Since you cannot unpair your Fire TV Stick remote by the remote itself, Amazon has built its Fire TV around your comfort where you can use a second remote to unpair the first one and multiple remotes can be used with one Fire TV.

Unpairing an older remote
When your FireStick remote stops working or responds slowly, you can unpair the remote and then try re-pairing it to fix the issue. You can even unpair a remote from another Fire TV and pair it with your Fire TV setup.
Amazon has also developed an app called the Fire TV app which is compatible with both Android and iOS. If a button on your remote or the remote itself stops working then you can use their Fire TV app to act as a second remote to unpair the older remote.
To unpair an older remote, you will first have to add a new remote
Here is how to pair a new remote.
Step 1: Head to Settings or the gear icon on the home page. Select the Remotes and Bluetooth Devices option.
Step 2: This will open the Controllers and Bluetooth Devices page. Here, select the Amazon Fire TV Remotes option.
Step 3: All of your currently linked remotes will be present here. You can go ahead to select Add New Remote and your Fire TV will look for nearby unpaired remotes.
Step 4: Hold the Home button for 10-20 seconds to pair the new device. The new device’s name will pop up on the list of nearby remotes and you can select it by using your currently paired older remote or if that is not working then through your virtual remote on the Amazon Fire TV mobile app.

Step 1: Head to Settings or the gear icon on the home page.
Step 2: Pick the Remotes and Bluetooth Devices option.
Step 3: This will open up the Controllers and Bluetooth Devices page and you can select the Amazon Fire TV Remotes option.
Step 4: Now, click on the first option, that is, Amazon Fire TV Remote, and you will find more information on the right side of your screen as you hover over this option.
Press the Menu button with the three horizontal white lines and then press the middle Select button to choose between the older and newer remotes. Whichever you click on, the other remote will be automatically unpaired.
This is how you can unpair a Fire TV Stick remote and keep in mind that:
- The remote cannot be unpaired by itself.
- You need to pair the new remote first to unpair the older one. You can also use the Fire TV app to do this.
- Your FireStick can handle multiple paired remotes at any time.
Hard reset remote
You can perform a hard reset of your Fire TV remote by following the steps given below in case your remote does not work even after unpairing and re-pairing:
- Remove your FireStick and unplug your TV from the power socket.
- On your remote, press and hold the left, menu, and back buttons simultaneously for 10-15 seconds.
- Let go of the buttons and wait for 10 seconds before removing the batteries from the remote.
- Plug back your Fire TV, wait for any message regarding the remote not being detected, and then put the batteries back into your remote.
- Now press the home button for a few seconds till the LED light blinks blue.
