Minecraft launcher won’t open: Quick Fix

  • by
  • 5 min read

Minecraft is a relatively easy-going game; however, with more editions of the game out now than ever, it can run into a few glitches here and there. Minecraft’s launcher is supposed to make this easier for PC players, allowing them to choose between the Bedrock and Java editions easily

In this article, we’re looking at issues with the Minecraft launcher, their causes and the solutions you can take to solve the problem.

Why won’t Minecraft launcher open?

There are several reasons why Minecraft Launcher might run into issues at random; however, the most common ones are

  • Conflicting profiles: Just like most launchers, the Minecraft one also makes custom profiles as well. At times, these profiles can cause conflicts between themselves which can cause the launcher to crash.
  • Interfering third-party services: At times, third-party services such as external programs or mods can also conflict with the launcher, causing it to crash.

How to fix this Minecraft error?

Here are a few solutions you can try out to see if they solve your problem.

Run the launcher as administrator

Running the Minecraft launcher as an administrator can help you get around any permissions issues that you might be facing. You have to press the Windows key and search for Minecraft Launcher. Click the Run as administrator button, and the launcher should run just fine.

Remove any mods

Conflicting third-party mods can also cause problems with the game. Remove any mods you might have and restart the launcher to see if it works well.

End the Minecraft process

Killing the Minecraft process from within the Task Manager can also help refresh the launcher. Open the Task Manager, and look for MinecraftLauncher.exe under the Processes tab. Once you find it, close it and try starting the launcher again.

Delete launcher profiles

Deleting launcher profiles causes it to regenerate them on launch. This can resolve issues with conflicting profiles.

Step 1: Press Windows Key + R to open the Run prompt. Type %AppData% and hit enter.

Step 2: Find and open the .minecraft folder.

Step 3: Find and delete the launcher_profiles.json file.

Now restart the launcher, and it should work as expected.

Perform a clean boot

To isolate the problem, perform a clean boot and then start the missing processes one at a time to find your culprit.

Step 1: Press the Windows key and search for System Configuration.

Step 2: Head over to the Services tab.

Step 3: Uncheck the Hide all Microsoft Services checkbox. Now click the Disable All button.

Step 4: Now head over to the Startup tab and click on Open Task Manager.

Step 5: Click the Startup tab again, select all the services and click the Disable button.

Now try running Minecraft launcher again. The Minecraft launcher won’t open error should be resolved.

Update your GPU drivers

Outdated GPU drivers can cause a lot of issues with games. Try and see if there are any updates available for your graphics card.

Step 1: Right-click Start and select Device Manager from the menu.

Step 2: Under Display Adaptors, find your graphics card’s name, right-click on it and click on Update Drivers.

Step 3: Click on Search automatically for drivers. Windows will automatically look for and download the latest drivers for your particular GPU.

While this should help resolve the error, in case it doesn’t, click Uninstall device and restart your PC to force Windows to install the required drivers. You can then update them later. Alternatively, you can also remove your GPU and reinsert it if you can.

Reinstall Minecraft

If nothing else works, try reinstalling Minecraft.

Step 1: Press the Windows key and search for Minecraft. Find the version you have and click Uninstall from the right pane.

Step 2: Once done, press Windows Key + R to open the Run prompt. Type %AppData% and hit enter.

Step 2: Find and delete the .minecraft folder.

Now try reinstalling Minecraft from the Microsoft store to see if the Minecraft launcher won’t open issue gets fixed.
