If you’ve ever tried or even thought of recording your computer’s screen for whatever reason, you might have heard of OBS, also known as the Open Broadcaster Software.

It’s a one-stop solution for all your recording and streaming needs. It supports multiple screen inputs, and you can add other elements right in the recording software as you’d like.

So if you’re struggling to record stuff on your computer, here’s how to record with OBS, followed by a guide for where OBS recordings are saved.

Since you’re here, we’re assuming you’ve already installed OBS, so we’re going to skip that. However, just in case you haven’t, head over to the OBS website and there should be a big download button waiting for you.

Now that we’ve got that out of the way, let’s get to the main part.

Step 1: Fire up OBS

Step 2: Under the sources tab, right-click the small plus icon in the bottom left and click on Display Capture.

Step 3: A window will appear asking you to create or select a source. We’re just going to create one.

Step 4: A screen dialogue box will open. Here you can select which display to capture (if you’re running multiple displays) and whether or not you want to capture the cursor.

Click on the OK button when done.

Step 5: Now that we’ve added our source, all we need to do is just hit the Start Recording button on the right side under the Controls panel, and OBS will start recording your screen.

The default OBS settings should be good enough for basic recording. Customising these settings is a whole another ballgame. However, if you’re looking to get into them, here’s how you can further dial them down.

Note that this is a general-purpose solution that will simply record whatever it is on your screen. It may or may not work for some applications like games or any other CPU or GPU intensive apps. For those, you can further choose either Game Capture or Window Capture for more control.

To find out your OBS recordings, all you need to do is click on Files > Show Recordings and OBS will open up the folder containing all of your recordings.

If you’d like them stored somewhere else, here’s how you can choose a custom location for OBS recordings to be saved.

Step 1: Click on File > Settings.

Step 2: Under the Output tab, click on the Recordings tab (or scroll down if your Output Mode is set to simple), and you’ll see all your recording settings.

Under the Recording Path field, you can select where you want your OBS recordings to be saved.
