Truecaller, launched in 2009 and developed by True Software Scandinavia AB, is a caller-identification app and has features like call-blocking, flash messaging, call-recording and instant messaging.

After installation, Truecaller asks to set itself as default calling and SMS app of your device and if you didn’t pay heed, most likely you might’ve ended up setting it as the default app. Truecaller asks you to set it as a default app because it wants to replace you built-in calling and SMS apps so that it can take full access over your phone data to help to get the information of the users who call or SMS you — like many other data mining companies.

If you want to remove Truecaller as your default then you can directly uninstall the Truecaller app from the device and if you want to use the features of Truecaller but don’t want to make it a default calling or SMS app of your device, then here is a guide to help you remove it in a few simple steps.

Removing Truecaller as the default app

Launch the apps menu and follow the steps below to remove Truecaller from your device’s default calling and SMS app.

Tap on the Settings app on your device.
Then tap on Apps and Notifications.
On the next screen, tap on the Default apps option.
In the default app list, select the Phone app and if you want to remove Truecaller from your default messaging apps, follow the same step as shown in the next screenshot.
Select the built-in phone app in the app list that appears on the next screen. Do the same for SMS default apps select the built-in app from the list.
