Samsung’s much-awaited annual launch event is here where the company will be unveiling the S23 line of phones and possibly other devices. The S series is the company’s flagship lineup of non-foldable phones that the company has been releasing at the beginning of each year for nearly a decade now.
This year, other than the S23 lineup, Samsung has also announced a new Galaxy Book Ultra laptop in addition to the Galaxy Book3 Pro 360 and Book3 Pro 16.Â
Price and release date
The baseline S23 starts at $799 for 8GB RAM and 128GB storage while the S23 Plus starts at $999 with 8GB and 256GB storage. As for the higher spec S23 Ultra, the base model starts at $1,199.99 for 8GB RAM and 256GB storage. All three phones are available for preorder at the time of writing and will start shipping on February 17.
SoC, memory and storage
All three phones will be powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset. Usually, these phones launch with a combination of Samsung’s own Exynos processors and Snapdragon of SoCs shared between different variants of the device for markets like Europe and India. However, the S23 lineup seems to have ditched the Exynos SoC for good.
The rest of the specifications are also in line with what you’d expect from a flagship device. The S23 Ultra gets anywhere between 8 to 12GB of RAM and 256 to 1TB of storage. As for the S23 and S23 Plus, the RAM is limited to 8GB, but users can choose between storage capacities ranging from 128 to 512GB. All three models do get the fastest UFS 4.0 storage.

Camera
The camera department is led by Samsung’s ISOCELL HP2 sensor. The S23 Ultra will be using the 200MP sensor in addition to three additional cameras including a 12MP ultrawide, 10MP telephoto with 3x optical zoom and another 10MP telephoto with up to 10x optical zoom.
For the more modest S23 and S23 Plus, the main camera will be a 50MP sensor accompanied by 12MP ultrawide and 10MP telephoto lenses with up to 3x optical zoom. As for the front camera, you’ll get a rather common 12MP front camera on all three devices.
Display
As is the norm, the S23 will be the smallest of the three devices, coming in with a 6.1-inch 1080p 120Hz OLED screen. The S23 Plus is slightly bigger at 6.6 inches in terms of screen size while retaining the other display aspects. Finally, the S23 Ultra gets the largest screen at 6.8 inches with a higher resolution at 1440p and 120Hz refresh rate.
All three displays are also capable of 1,750 nits of peak brightness with Samsung claiming that display tone mapping has improved this year, meaning the display can adapt to a range of lighting situations. You’ll also get HDR10+ support and Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2 for protection.
Design
We’ll be seeing three new devices join the S23 lineup. The relatively simpler S23 and S23 plus and a higher-end S23 Ultra. The S23 Ultra will be a more Note-like device with square corners and a built-in S Pen stylus. The regular S23 and S23 Plus on the other hand will come with softer edges and have ditched the camera bump distinguishing the S22 and S22 Plus devices from the S22 Ultra.
Battery and Charging
The S23 Ultra comes with the biggest battery in the S23 lineup at 5,000mAh. It also supports 45W wired, 10W wireless and 4.5W reverse wireless charging. The S23 Plus drops the battery to 4,700mAh but retains the charging speed as well as the wireless and reverse wireless charging capabilities.
Finally, the baseline S23 gets the smallest battery at 3,900mAh with 25W wired charging, 10W wireless and 4.5W reverse wireless charging. All three phones support the Qi and PMA wireless charging standards.
