Bluetooth connections have come a long way from the slow, stuttery and unstable connections that we used to get. These days, Bluetooth connections are fast, work stably and maintain good audio quality.

In this article, we’re talking about a Bluetooth feature SCMS-T, what it does and everything else you need to know.

What is SCMS-T?

SCMS stands for Serial Copy Management System. It’s a copy protection system that prevents digital audio tape recorders from making copies of the audio being played.

SCMS-T is a copy protection method created to protect content streamed over Bluetooth connections by filtering the files it’s playing. It automatically rejects the contents if a file or headset doesn’t have SCMS-T.

This works by setting a copy bit in all the original copies. This copy bit is unique and prevents anyone from making any further copies while at the same time letting the creator make unlimited first copies.

These copy bits usually have three states:

  • copy once
  • copy allowed
  • copy prohibited

How to disable SCMS-T on Windows?

Disabling SCMS-T can help in resolving connectivity issues with incompatible headsets. There are two ways you can disable SCMS-T on Windows.

Disabling the Bluetooth Support Service

By disabling the Bluetooth Support Service, you can disable any active enhancements, including SCMS-T.

Step 1: Press Windows Key + R to open the Run prompt. Type services.msc and hit enter.

Step 2: Find the Bluetooth Support Service, right-click it and select Stop.

SCMS-T, alongwith any additional enhancements, will be disabled now.

Using the registry editor

We don’t recommend using this method as it fiddles around with your registry. However, if the method mentioned above didn’t work out for you, you can do this instead.

Step 1: Press Windows Key + R to open the Run prompt. Type regedit and hit enter.

Step 2: Navigate to the following path.

Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\BluetoothUserService\Parameters

Step 3: Double-click the ServiceDllUnloadOnStop dword and change its value to 0.00000001

Restart your computer when done.
