How to share files between two PCs over LAN?

While wireless data transfer has developed rapidly over the last few years, a physical connection is still preferable for its reliability. While you may, generally, use flash drives or hard disks to make large transfers; using LAN cables can result in less time-intensive moving processes due to the faster data transfer speeds they offer.

This guide will help you set up two computers so that you will be able to transfer files between them over a LAN connection.

Step 2: Now, click on the navigation box and type in \Network and Sharing Center.

Step 3: From the options on the left-hand side, click on Change advanced sharing settings.

Step 4: Expand options under All Networks and turn on Public folder sharing. Click on Save changes and repeat these steps on the second PC.

If you’re sharing files with a trusted computer we recommend you turn off Password protected sharing — marked in green — to avoid the hassle of requiring credentials to access files on the network but make sure to turn it back on after you are done.

Step 5: Connect both computers via a LAN cable.

Step 6: Navigate back to Network and Sharing Center and click on the Ethernet connection.

Step 7: In this pop-up click on Properties and then Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) and then Properties.

Step 8: Configure the Static IP for your PCs

On the first PC, select Use the following IP address and enter the following values:

  • IP Address:
  • Subnet mask:
  • Default gateway:

On the second PC, repeat Step 6 and 7 and then click on Use the following IP address and enter the following values:

  • IP address:
  • Subnet mask:
  • Default gateway:

Step 9: Open File Explorer and click on Network tab.

If everything is set up correctly, both PC’s will appear under the Computer tab. Ensure the Ethernet network is set to Private.

Step 10: Locate and right-click on the folder you want to share, click on Give access to and select Specific People.

Step 11: Choose Everyone from the drop-down menu, click on Add, change Permission Level to Read/Write and click on Share.

Now, you can use the second PC to access files from the first and copy the files — just like you would do with local data — via the Network section in File Explorer.

To share files from the second PC, repeat Step 9 to 11 and then use the first PC to access files.
