Stop all media from downloading automatically
If you want to stop all media from downloading on Whatsapp, follow the steps given below.
- Open WhatsApp and then tap on the three-dot button at the top right of the screen.
- Tap on Settings from the drop-down menu.
- In the Settings menu, tap on Chats.
- Here, turn the toggle off beside Media Visibility.

Stop downloading media from a particular person
If you want to stop downloading media from a specific person on Whatsapp, follow the steps given below.
- Open WhatsApp and then tap on the person’s name.
- Now, tap on the three-dot button on the top right of the screen.
- From the drop-down menu, tap on View Contacts option.
- After that, tap on the Media Visibility option.
- In the new window titled Show newly downloaded media.

By turning off auto download option from settings
An alternate way to turn off auto download in Whatsapp is via the app settings. Follow the steps given below to stop auto-download.
- Open WhatsApp and then tap on the three-dot button on the top right corner of the screen.
- Tap on Settings from the drop-down menu.
- Now, tap on Data and storage settings.
- Here, you will see two options under the media auto-download option — When using mobile data and When connected on WiFi. Tap on these options and then unselect all the tick marks that are there.
- After you are finished, tap OK.
