This accessory may not be supported: Quick Fix

iPhones are known for their top-notch software above everything else. But as much refinement as Apple has put into iOS; it still isn’t immune to the occasional bug or glitch.

In this article, we’re taking a look at the “this accessory may not be supported” error, its causes and how you can get rid of the issue.

What causes the accessory may not be supported error?

The simplest and the most common answer to this is when you’re using third-party or non-certified accessories with your iPhone. If you’re using a non-MFi-certified accessory, you’re likely to run into this issue, in addition to the accessory being damaged or faulty.

This could also indicate a software issue with your iPhone, although extremely likely. Lastly, it could also come down to a dirty or faulty lightning port.

How to fix this issue?

Luckily, there are a few simple solutions that you can use to get out of this situation.

Inspect your accessory

The first thing you need to do is inspect your accessory and make sure it’s compatible with your iPhone. Third-party or counterfeit accessories often fail to work as they’re not MFi-certified. You can tell this by inspecting the product’s packaging. All MFi-certified accessories have a ‘Made for iPhone | iPad | iPod’ badge on the packaging.

Check compatibility

A lot of Apple accessories (and even features) are supported by certain iPhones only. If you’re getting any such errors, try checking whether or not your iPhone is compatible with the accessory you’re trying to use in the first place.

Restart your iPhone

No harm ever came from simply rebooting your phone. Rebooting your device, whether it’s iPhone or Android, can solve several seemingly random issues.

Update iOS

Often a new accessory will require a particular iOS update to work with an iPhone. If you’re bought something hot off the shelf, make sure to check for any system updates before you starting using your latest purchase.

  • Tap on Software Update.
  • Ensure that you’re on the latest update available. If not, update your device immediately.

Try another one

This one might sound obvious, and that’s because it is. If a cable or pair of earphones isn’t working with your iPhone, try borrowing one from a friend or neighbour and check if that works with your phone. If it does, you can rest easy that the issue lies with the accessory, not your phone. If it doesn’t, move on to the next solution.

Clean your ports

This one is often overlooked, but dust can get into ports and cause all sorts of problems. In this case, dust can get into your iPhone’s lightning port and cause improper contact between the accessory plug and port, triggering the error. Just use a cotton swab or a toothpick with some cotton on the tip to clear out your port of any dust or debris and try again.

Check your adaptor

Before you throw in the towel and send your phone for a repair, it might be worth giving a shot to your power adaptor. If it’s faulty, you can get this error regardless of what cable you’re using. Try using the cable with a standard USB port or with another adaptor to see if it works.

Send it in for repairs

If nothing else works, it’s time for a trip to the repair shop. Your lightning port is likely damaged, or there’s some other internal fault with your phone, and the better it gets resolved, the better it is for your phone.
