Twitter will now let brands tease items or ‘drops’ on the platform before they go on sale, with customers being able to sign up for reminders before launch through Twitter’s notifications. The feature is called Product Drops, and it’s already in testing.
The test is limited to iOS uses in the US using the platform in English. According to Twitter, partners running the test include Dior, The Home Depot and Union Los Angeles. The Lego Group and the Fossil and Staple partnership are also expected to join the test soon.
Every time a merchant tweets about an upcoming product launch, users will see a “Remind me” button at the bottom of the tweet. Tapping this button will sign users up for a notification to be delivered the day the sale goes live.
On launch day, all signed up users will receive an in-app Twitter notification announcing the sale 15 minutes before and after the sale goes live. The notification will show up in the notifications tab on the platform (just like every other Twitter notification you get). Tapping it will take you straight to the merchant websites where Twitter hopes you’ll beat other shoppers.
If you’d rather know more about the product before signing up for a sale reminder, clicking on the merchant’s tweet will take you to a product details page. The page will include the price, pictures, description and a clickable hashtag, letting you get a jump on what’s going around the product on Twitter.
While e-commerce isn’t as big of a deal on Twitter as it is on a few competing platforms, Instagram, for example, has an entire dedicated shopping tab; this isn’t Twitter’s first rodeo with the concept. The platform already has features like Shop Spotlight, Live Shopping and Twitter Shops, letting users browse and shop for products from a specific merchant without ever having to leave the platform.
