Pronouns are forming a prominent niche in our social media world. Almost every bio on any social media account, for example, on Instagram or Twitter, boasts various pronouns.
In this article, we address pronouns like ‘she/her’ and tell you everything you need to know.
Pronouns on Instagram
In May 2021, Instagram announced a new feature that allowed users to add pronouns to their bios. Pronouns like she/her, he/him, and they/them were then used by millions of users worldwide. In case you were wondering why Instagram did this, it was to provide a smoother way of addressing members of the LGBTQ+ community.
Pronouns are a way to help the people around you identify you correctly and make you feel comfortable. They are used to replace a person’s name; however, it is often misused or misinterpreted. Using someone’s pronouns shows respect and helps spread awareness about correct gender identification.
The usage of pronouns in social media bios by cisgenders is complimentary and supports their transgender counterparts. Gender identity is not the same as gender expression and using pronouns in the right way makes them feel significant. It helps correct misgendering other humans, which often makes them feel alienation or dismissed.
Hence, helping out and normalising the usage of correct pronouns is a perceptive way of bringing about acknowledgement and respect. So how do you feel like joining the trend as well? Given below are steps you can follow to change your bio and add the pronouns that you identify with:
- Open the Instagram app and tap on your profile photo in a circle in the bottom-right corner.
- Tap on edit profile and you will find a heading called Pronouns.
- Tap on the box next to it to add yours. You can add up to 4 pronouns. You can select to show it to just your followers or anyone visiting your profile according to your preference.
- Tap on done in the top-right corner after you have chosen your pronouns.
Currently, this feature is not available in India. You can either add it to your introduction or you can contact Instagram help and inform them about the option’s unavailability.
