Dark mode has somewhat become a trend in recent times and though late to the party, Facebook-owned instant messaging service has joined in and will be updated with the dark mode for Android and iOS in the coming days.

The upcoming version of WhatsApp will allow Android 9, 10 and iOS 13 users to use the app in Dark mode. To enable the dark mode in Android 10 and iOS 13, enable the feature in the device’s system settings and those running Android 9 Pie can do the same by going to WhatsApp’s Settings > Chats > Theme > Dark.

The company says that they emphasised on two major aspects while designing dark mode for WhatsApp — readability and information hierarchy — by using a colour scheme to reduce eye fatigue as well as ensure that important information can be found easily.

“Dark mode for WhatsApp offers a fresh look on a familiar experience. It’s designed to reduce eye strain in low light environments. And we hope it helps prevent those awkward moments when your phone lights up the room,” the company announced.

Dark mode comes to WhatsApp for Android and iOS Last week, Facebook called off the F8 Developer Conference 2020, which was to be held in San Jose, California, amid Coronavirus (COVID-19) fears, a week after the company announced that they won’t be attending or showcasing at the Game Developers Conference 2020 due to the same reason. Microsoft and Unity backed out of GDC 2020 citing similar concerns.

Facebook is planning to replace the in-person F8 event this year with locally hosted events, videos and live streams and will be sharing the exact details for the same in the coming weeks.

Google has also announced that they won’t be hosting I/O event this year due to Coronavirus fears.
