Facebook-owned Whatsapp announced a set of new features, including QR code-based contact addition, improvements to group video calls and dark mode for Whatsapp web, among others, which are scheduled to roll out over the next few weeks.

Currently, adding new contacts via Whatsapp requires one step too many, So, the QR-based feature will be a welcome change as it quickens the process. Users will now be able to quickly scan a unique code to add a contact rather than entering their stock Contacts app or a full phone number.

A tweak made to the eight-member video call feature, which was added to the app in April, will now allow users to enlarge one of the video feeds. A new icon in group chats of less than eight members will also allow members to start a video call with a single tap.

Dark Mode, which was launched in March for Android and iOS, will also be available for desktop and web client users — bringing uniformity across platforms.

Also, the Status feature — WhatsApp’s take on Instagram and Snapchat Stories — can now be used on devices running KaiOS.

Animated stickers prevalent in several instant messaging services are also making their way to the platform with upcoming updates. WhatsApp is rolling out new packs, which they claim are more fun and expressive.

Last month, building up on Facebook Pay’s infrastructure, in-app digital payment feature was rolled out for Whatsapp in Brazil. It is aimed at making it easier for small and medium-sized businesses and merchants to receive payments, including for sales made within the app.

Much like any other digital payment platform or wallet app, users in Brazil will also be able to send and receive money. Users in other countries can expect the feature to hit their devices later this year or earlier next year as Facebook continues towards its goal of streamlining payments throughout its line of products, including Instagram.
