How to blur the background in Zoom?

Zoom is one of the most popular video conferencing platforms at the moment. The platform constantly keeps adding features to make the user experience even better and more flexible.

In this article, we’re taking a look at how to blur the background on your Zoom calls on PC and on the Zoom mobile app.

Blurring Zoom background on PC

If you’re on PC, you can blur your background either before on during a call. Here’s how.

Blurring background before a call starts

If you’re not in a call yet, you can go ahead and set the background blur (or any of the other filters that Zoom offers) in advance so when you join a call, your background is already blurred.

Step 1: Open the Zoom program and click the settings gear icon in the top-right.

Step 2: Head over to Backgrounds & Filters and select Blur under Virtual Backgrounds.

And that’s all you need to do. The next time you join a call your background will already be blurred. 


Blurring background when in a call

If you’re already in a call and need to blur your background, follow these steps. 

Step 1: When in a call, either right-click your video or click the up arrow on the Stop Video button and click Choose Virtual Backgrounds …

Step 2: Select Blur under Virtual Backgrounds.

Your video background will now immediately be blurred.

Blurring backgrounds on the Zoom app

If you’re on the Zoom mobile app, you can blur the background of your video only when you’re in a meeting. Follow these steps.

  • Join a meeting and tap More in the bottom right.
  • Select Background and Filters.
  • Under Backgrounds, select Blur and you’re good to go. 

Do keep in mind that Zoom syncs settings between the desktop and the phone app provided you’ve logged into both using the same account. In such cases, if you set a background on the desktop app it’ll automatically apply to the phone app as well.
