The battery in your iPhone, like all other batteries, depreciate over time and there isn’t anything that you can do to stop it. But you can surely ensure that the depreciation doesn’t accelerate and your device lasts longer.

In this article, we’re going to talk about two things — how to check your iPhone’s battery life status with Battery Health (Beta) and tips to extend your battery life.

How to check your iPhone’s battery health?

Apple has released this feature in the beta phase, which lets you check how much your battery has depreciated and what percentage of the original energy it can still hold.

To access this feature, do the following:

  • Open Settings of your iPhone
  • Scroll down, find and tap on Battery or search for it using the option at the top
  • Tap on Battery Health (Beta)

Now you’ll be able to view the Maximum Capacity of your iPhone’s battery as well as know whether or not your battery supports Peak Performance Capability.

The Maximum Capacity of your device depicts the current capacity of your battery as compared to when it was new. A lower capacity means fewer hours between charges.

This feature was introduced by Apple following last year’s incident where it was discovered that the company rolled out updates that deterred the performance of an old device, making them slow to avoid device heating up and unexpected shutdowns.

The Peak Performance Capability depicts just that. The following features are affected if the Peak Performance Capability of your iPhone drops:

  • App launch times
  • Frame rates while scrolling
  • Dimmer backlight (this can, however, be modified via the Control Center)
  • Lower speaker volume by up to -3dB
  • Frame rate reductions in apps
  • Camera flash might also be disabled in extreme cases
  • Apps might require to be reloaded in order to refresh when running in the background

Tips to extend iPhone’s battery life

While it’s inevitable to hope for a battery to run forever, its life can be extended by doing a few simple things. Follow these tips in order to make sure that your iPhone’s battery has a longer life.

  • Don’t maintain a full charge
  • Don’t let your device discharge
  • Don’t let the device overheat or be exposed to excess cold ambient temperature
  • Don’t use portable chargers for extended periods
  • Don’t use unauthorised 3rd party chargers
  • Store your iPhone with 50% battery
  • Remove certain cases while charging
  • Update to the latest software
