Venmo is a US-based popular peer-to-peer or P2p e-wallet that allows for easy transfer of money. With Venmo, you can split bills, pay for groceries, and purchase other utilities. Through the Venmo mobile app, you can also transfer money into a friend’s account digitally. While Venmo is abundantly used in the US, can it be used elsewhere in the world?

In this article, we figure out if Venmo can work for international money transfers as well as other alternatives as a precaution.

Venmo’s reach

While Venmo is being used since 2009, currently it is only focused on processing digital payments made in the US. For a Venmo transaction to be successful, both the sender and the receiver should be in the United States. If you are in the US, then you can send money to anyone living in the US via Venmo.

No, Venmo does not allow any international monetary transactions.

When you are abroad

Even if you are a citizen of the United States, you cannot use Venmo internationally while traveling abroad except to other people living in the US. You also might not be able to access your Venmo account. You can contact Venmo support if you are unable to use your account even after getting back to the US.

Using a VPN

You cannot access your Venmo account even if you are using a VPN to disguise your location. Since Venmo won’t work on VPN, you cannot create an account to pay someone in the US if you are not living there. Venmo only works as long as you are in the US having a US bank account.

Venmo specifications

If you are unable to follow the points given below, then you will not be able to create a Venmo account or your current one will be deleted:

  • The user should be a resident of the US.
  • The user should be of 18 years or above to use Venmo.
  • Both the sender and the receiver must have US bank accounts.
  • The phone number that a user is using cannot be previously linked with another Venmo account.

Venmo alternatives for international payments

If you have decided to move out of the US for a specific duration, either long-term or short-term, then you can either contact Venmo support or you can follow the alternatives given as follows:

  • PayPal (Venmo’s parent company allows international transfers)
  • Wise
  • Remitly
  • Revolut
  • Paysend
  • Skrill

The above-given names are some of the many ways that you can use to send money internationally, be it from the comfort of your home or on a plane to Paris.
