Google blocked over 5 billion ads in 2024, claims new report

Google blocked 5.1 billion bad ads, restricted another 9.1 billion, and blocked or restricted ads on 1.3 billion pages. In addition, it suspended over 39.2 million advertiser accounts and suspended another 5 million accounts for scamming people.

Out of the 5.1 billion ads stopped, 793.1 million were abusing the ad network, 503.1 million were trademarks, 491.3 million were personalised ads, 280.3 million catered to legal requirements, and 193.7 million were advertising financial services. The claims come as part of Google’s 2024 ads safety report, revealed on April 16, 2025.

Restricted ads also had a similar demographic. 428.8 million were for advertising legal requirements, and 268.3 million were for financial services. Gambling and games, adult content, and copyright ads came next with 108.9, 96, and 115.1 million, respectively.

In 2024, action was also taken against many pages. Google blocked 1.2 billion pages monetising sexual content, 24.8 million pages running dangerous or derogatory content, and 19.3 million pages advertising malicious or unwanted software. Surprisingly, pages running sexually explicit content ranked last, with 1.1 million pages blocked or restricted.

Google is also claiming to help protect global elections. They were the first company to launch disclosure requirements for AI-generated content in election ads, and verified more than 8,900 new election advertisers. 10.7 million election ads were also removed from unverified accounts. Policies against “demonstrably false election claims” were also enforced globally and its advertiser identity verification program has expanded to over 200 countries.

The search giant has been hard training its AI models and LLMs to find and flag new threats and abuse patterns. The AI models can also spot business impersonation and illegitimate payment details as early indicators to tackle ad fraud.

In fact, AI-powered models were responsible for detecting and enforcing 97 percent of the pages that Google took action against in 2024. The AI models help “significantly expedite” site reviews, allowing the company to monetise pages quickly while preventing its ads from showing up on sites that violate its policies.

Google also listed deepfakes, with over 700,000 accounts suspended for using AI-generated deepfakes in public figure impersonation scams. Four hundred fifteen million ads were blocked or removed alongside more than 5 million accounts for violating Google’s ad policies related to scams.
