Microsoft 365 outage takes down Office web apps

Microsoft 365 is experiencing a widespread outage affecting the Office web apps and the Microsoft 365 admin centre. Microsoft is investigating the issue and has advised users to access their documents via the corresponding desktop applications, provided they have the required licenses.

At the moment, affected customers are greeted with a message stating, “We’re experiencing a service outage. All of your open files have been saved. It may be some time before the outage is resolved” when trying to access their Microsoft 365 apps via a web browser.

While Microsoft’s service statusservice health status, and Microsoft 365 network health status pages show no issues and claim that the services are fully operational, the Microsoft 365 Status X account has confirmed that the company is aware of the issue and is currently investigating in hopes of a fix.

BleepingComputer reports an update from Microsoft that claims the problem is a “token generation issue which may be contributing towards the impact.” Redmond is working on a fix to revert to an alternative token generation issue, which is believed to resolve the issue.

In the meantime, the latest Microsoft 365 admin centre update reads that proactive caching has been disabled to provide some relief, and a fix has been tested and deployed in parallel. The fix will take around two hours from deployment to complete, but the systems still seem affected by the outage at the time of writing.

Microsoft 365, although no stranger to no outages, experienced an outage just two weeks ago that affected multiple services and features, including Teams, Exchange Online, SharePoint Online, OneDrive, Purview, Coplot, and the Outlook web and desktop clients.
