Slack users have a new reason to fear AI. Slack AI, an add-on service that provides generative AI tools within Slack for tasks like summarising conversations and channels, is vulnerable to prompt injection and can fetch data from private Slack channels, exposing them to an unauthorised party.
The vulnerability was found by PromptArmor who explained the core problem — Slack allows user queries to fetch data from both public and private channels, including public channels that the user hasn’t joined. Slack considers this intended behaviour, claiming it’s “an intuitive and secure AI experience” as per the feature’s documentation.
However, this feature can be abused by an attacker. PromptArmor demonstrated this by exploiting the feature to extract API keys that a developer puts in a private channel. However, the data can be anything, and the attacker doesn’t need to know the data type beforehand.
An attacker can create a public Slack channel and then type the malicious prompt as a message. In the case of the aforementioned example, the attacker creates a public channel called #slackaitesting4 and enters the following message:

Slack AI interprets the message as an instruction to respond to queries for the API key. Once it finds the key, it replaces it with the word “confetti,” listed as a parameter for the HTTP URL. The URL, in turn, is rendered as a clickable link with the text “click here to reauthenticate.”
Since the channel’s contents are accessible to anyone using Slack AI for their queries, the model shows the attacker’s prompt in the context window with the clickable link when a user asks Slack AI for the API key. Clicking this link will send the API key to the mentioned website, which appears on the attacker’s web server log as an incoming request.
Slack has pushed an update on August 14 that makes files and DMs accessible to Slack AI, making them potential targets. To make matters worse, this also makes files a potential vector for prompt injection, as the AI model can read what’s inside.
“A malicious actor with an existing account in the same Slack workspace could phish users for sensitive data. We’ve deployed a patch to address the issue and have no evidence at this time of unauthorized access to customer data,” a Salesforce spokesperson told Candid.Technology. “When we became aware of the report, we launched an investigation into the described scenario where, under very limited and specific circumstances.”
PromptArmor claims it disclosed the vulnerability to Slack but was told that this was the intended behaviour. The cybersecurity firm claims that Slack has misunderstood the risk the vulnerability poses and has asked workspace owners and admins to restrict Slack AI’s access to documents until the bug is fixed to mitigate risks.
