A lot of social media apps that have amassed a userbase of millions across the globe often use heavy content moderation algorithms to serve content to users that the app thinks they’ll like instead of content from creators they want to see.
BeReal hopes to change that by encouraging users to post and see original, unmoderated content from their friends. This also means that the app cuts down on the insane amount of notifications that a lot of these apps send their users.
However, just because the app aims to reduce social media notifications on its users’ phones doesn’t mean it always does that. In this article, we’re taking a look at why BeReal is sending you notifications when there isn’t anything notification-worthy happening on the app.

BeReal notifications explained
The persisting notification bug was mostly impacting iOS users where a notification from the app would continue to remain in the notification shade even after you tapped it to open the app which should in theory dismiss any notifications from the app.
That said, both iOS and Android users have reported that sometimes the notification might not get dismissed. The reasons behind this include
- Poor internet connectivity.
- Bug/glitch in the app.
- Corrupt app cache.
How to fix this?
Here are four fixes you can try out.
Clear cache
Sometimes a corrupt cache or data in the app can also cause such glitches. Here’s how to clear the BeReal app’s cache.
- Head into the phone settings and tap on Apps and notifications.
- Tap on Show all apps and find BeReal from the list. If you’ve recently used BeReal, it’ll show up in the recent apps as well.
- Tap on BeReal.
- Then tap on Storage & cache.
- Then tap on the Clear Cache button.
This should dismiss the notification.
Check your internet
Now’s also a good time to check whether or not you have an active internet connection. If you’re on WiFi, make sure you’ve got an active link and that there are no signal issues. On cellular data, ensure that it’s enabled and that you’re getting good network coverage.
Restarting your router can help get rid of a bunch of seemingly random internet and connectivity issues that may be hindering your connection to BeReal’s servers and hence not dismissing the notification.
Update the app
Another reason for your profile picture not updating could simply be because of an outdated app version. Update the app from the Google Play Store or the Apple App Store depending on your device to see if that helps.
Reinstall the app
If updating didn’t help, delete the app from your phone and head over to your respective app store to download it again. Reinstalling often clears out any corrupt app files that may be hampering functionality and helps fix bugs like this.
