If you have black spots on your Chromebook screen, then it can be a frustrating situation that will block your view of the entire screen. Black spots can happen due to many reasons and sometimes there is a solution, while for others, you just have to replace the screen or the device. Hindering your productivity is not beneficial for you, so looking into solutions can be a good call.
In this article, we will be exploring the various options and solutions that you can adopt in order to fix the black spots on your Chromebook screen.
The reason behind the spots
A black spot on your Chromebook can be due to many reasons. If your Chromebook was recently damaged by either falling or another blunt force, then this might be why you can see black spots on the screen. If you don’t recall dropping your portable Chromebook, then read the points given below for more clarity:
- Power fluctuations: A sudden surge or drop in the voltage can cause unstable fluctuations and might damage the transistor in your Chromebook.
- Humidity: If the humidity in your environment is high, then droplets might creep into any exposed area of your laptop which can be damaging to your laptop. To avoid this, you can read the user manual for the ideal humidity levels at which your Chromebook can work.
- Excessive heat or cold: Temperature can be even crueler as leaving your Chromebook next to a heating or freezing source can cause pixels to get fixed in one place.
- Static imagery: If your laptop is stuck on one image for a very long duration then its transistor can be damaged so make sure to take good care of your Chromebook. Use it and store it in a safe environment.

Fixing the black spots
On small-resolution laptops, the black spots can appear bigger. If a pixel is dead then a black spot might appear in its place. If this damage happens during manufacturing, then it can reappear over time with usage even if it looked perfect when it arrived. If your pixel is stuck instead of permanently damaged then they’ll appear coloured when the screen is powered on and will appear in RGB colours.
There are chances that a stuck pixel might go away by itself however, a dead pixel will remain as it is, black in colour. You can switch off your Chromebook for over an hour before restarting it to check if the problem continues to exist. If yes, then follow the steps given below:
Apply pressure
Clean the screen before attempting this method. Now gently press on the dead pixels and rub the screen. If the black spots are in the corner of your screen, then rub the spots away gently by pressing on them using your finger.
Third-party sites
You can head to a website by the name of JScreenFix where you can fix stuck pixels for free. Cool down your laptop by keeping it shut for two to three hours then follow the instructions to run this application on your Chromebook by following the steps given below:
- Open the website and click on the Launch JScreenFix dialog box.
- Your screen will become dark and a pixelated coloured box will appear. You will be able to maneuver the box around your screen.
- Take this box to the black spots and let it work its magic for over 15 minutes to an hour. Let the process take its time.
What the pixelated box does is shift between multiple colours quickly, which helps reinvigorate dead or stuck pixels. The dead or stuck pixels will probably get restored after this process.
If this website does not work for you, then you can use PixelHealer. It follows the same process as above and here, you move the red box to the area of the black spots. You have to then set the timer and click on a Start Flashing option. Try to avoid staring at the screen during this flashing process to avoid any induced seizures.
Warranty
If your Chromebook is still under warranty when the black spots appear, then you can take it to their official service centers or back to the seller to ask about the warranty procedure. All the service center needs to do is replace the LCD screen with a new one to completely remove any pixel defect.
Furthermore, you could just take your laptop to the repair shop instead and get it repaired faster. Make sure to ask them to replace it with a defect-proof screen.
Update Chrome OS and Drivers
If your software or drivers are outdated then it can cause software issues on your Chromebook, which can lead to black spots on the screen at times. Head to settings to check for any recent updates in the About Chrome OS section. You can also update your graphics drivers by heading to the manufacturer’s website or using a built-in update feature in your Chromebook.
