Canon announced a new iOS app, Live Switcher Mobile, which lets users switch between multiple camera angles with a singular touch. The live streaming app allows wirelessly connecting and switching between video feeds from three devices, including iPads and iPhones.
After downloading the app on the devices, they must be connected to the same Wi-Fi network to broadcast the live footage via a streaming platform. It removes the requirement of bulky equipment and wires connected to the PCs. The app is currently available for download and costs nothing to install. However, Canon stated in a news release that some features may require the user to register and pay for regular use.
The streaming quality is capped at 720p for free users with a watermark which is visible to the audience. The app interface is littered with ads; however, they will not be visible to the viewers. The maximum resolution available is 1080p, which requires a payment of $17.99 per month and removes the ads and watermark.
It is possible to stream the screens of different devices with the app as well to create videos showcasing live gameplay or recordings of other applications. A single device using the app is assigned as the primary camera and main device which controls the switching.
Aside from the main device, up to two devices could be connected to provide live screen recordings or camera feed. The streamer also gets a live feed of comments that they can reply to, only on the two platforms, YouTube and Facebook.
Manually switching between feeds is not the only option as an automatic timer can be set to switch between sources in intervals of eight to twenty seconds. It comes with a picture in picture feature with image and text overlays to customise the live stream with branding and captions. Users are required to pay a fee for the addition of graphics from outside the app.
The app is currently supported on iOS versions 16/17/18 as well as iPadOS 16/17/18. Livestreams on platforms such as YouTube and Facebook, “can easily be made,” while the streaming URL needs to be added for other platforms. While the app is limited to only mobile devices for the time being, Canon said that the app, “will also support digital camera connection in the future.”
