Google will begin developing ChromeOS on significant portions of the Android stack to bring Google AI advancements and new functionality to users. The company will leverage the Android Linux kernel and frameworks to improve the overall ChromeOS experience while maintaining security and user-friendly design.
This move signifies a major advancement in the collaboration between the two platforms. This partnership has previously enabled Android app functionality on ChromeOS and merged Bluetooth stacks starting with ChromeOS 122.
The Android stack represents a compilation of software layers essential to the Android operating system. It functions as the fundamental framework supporting the operational efficiency and capabilities of Android devices.
Central to this structure are various pivotal components that collaborate to ensure a dynamic user experience and facilitate the extensive array of applications and features available on Android devices.
In Google I/O 2024, the company announced AI integration into various apps and workflows. Integrating elements of the Android stack into ChromeOS will streamline development, expand app compatibility, and increase interoperability between ChromeOS devices.
“Bringing the Android-based tech stack into ChromeOS will allow us to accelerate the pace of AI innovation at the core of ChromeOS, simplify engineering efforts, and help different devices like phones and accessories work better together with Chromebooks,” announced Google.
While these foundational changes are underway, Google has indicated that consumers will not experience the new system for some time. Once, these changes are public, users will be allowed a hassle-free transition.
As of now, Google will provide regular updates and innovations as scheduled. “These improvements in the tech stack are starting now but won’t be ready for consumers for quite some time. When they are, we’ll provide a seamless transition to the updated experience,” explained Google.
When the transition is complete, Chromebook users can take advantage of the latest AI technologies that Google will offer for Android.
