EA Sports announced the Team of the Year starting XI in FIFA 22 as voted by millions of fans from across the world on Thursday. The team was picked from a pool of 80 nominees, with voting happening between January 10-17.
All Team of the Year items will be available in the FIFA Ultimate Team game mode over the next week, starting with the attackers from January 21.

Attackers
Kylian Mbappe became the youngest player to reach 100 goals in Ligue 1. In December 2021, he also became the youngest to reach 100 goals with a single club. Robert Lewandowski also made a mark by scoring 43 goals, the most of any player in Europe’s big five leagues in 2021 and a new Bundesliga record.
Lionel Messi was named the best player at the 2021 Copa America, winning the award for the second time since 2015 and being the fourth to win the award twice.
Midfielders
Kevin De Bruyne created 3.7 chances every 90 minutes in the Premier League throughout 2021, achieving the best rate of any player in the league. Jorginho made 25 interceptions with Italy in the summer, the most recorded by a player in one tournament. N’Golo Kante also averaged 1.8 interceptions per 90 minutes in all Chelsea matches in 2021, hitting the best for any player with at least 2000 minutes played for the club in the year.
Defenders
Joao Cancelo made a spot for himself by completing the most passes of any full-back in Europe’s big five leagues in 2021, coming in at 2403 completed passes. Ruben Dias finished on the winning side in 32 out of the 38 matches played in the Premier League, once again, the most of any defender in Europe’s big five leagues.
Marquinhos wasn’t behind in passing, completing 2901 of 3131 attempted passes in all matches for Paris Saint-Germain in 2021, the club highest. Lastly, Achraf Hakimi got a total of 151 touches on the ball in the opposition box in league matches in 2021, once again, the most of any defender in Europe’s big five leagues.
Goalkeeper
Rounding up the starting XI, goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma was named Player of the Tournament for Italy, the only goalkeeper to win the award.
