How to add a border in Google Docs?

Google Docs is one of the best cloud word processors out there at the moment. It’s super easy to use, has pretty much everything you’d need to create documents exactly down to your liking and can be accessed from anywhere in the world with any device. 

However, it still leaves a few things off the table. For example, if you’re looking to add a border to your document, there’s no direct way of doing that. In this article, we’re going over a few workarounds you can take to make a border in Google Docs.

Make a table

You can make a 1 x 1 table and use the cell as a large border. Here’s how. 

Step 1: Open a Google Doc, click on Insert, followed by Table and select one box.

Step 2: Resize the cell to fir your requirements. You’ll also find formatting options such as borders and background in the top right.

Drawing a border

If you don’t like the table approach, you can draw your own borders. This approach also allows for custom shaped borders.

Step 1: Start a new Google Doc, click Insert followed by Drawing and then New.

Step 2: Click on the Shapes menu and draw a shape of your choice

Step 3: Once you’ve outlined the shape, you can modify its border and other related settings. Click on Save and Close when you’re done.

Step 4: Your drawing will now be inserted in the document; resize it accordingly using the handles on the edges.

Inserting a border image

Lastly, if you can’t get your border of choice into Google Docs, you can always upload it as an image. Here’s how.

Step 1: Head over to Insert followed by Image and then choose Upload from computer. Now select your border’s image file.

Note that your file should have a transparent background unless you plan on using the same background as in the image file.

Step 2: Resize the image using the handles on the edges. 


Adding a border to a paragraph

While Google Docs may not have an option to add borders to pages, it can add borders to paragraphs just fine.

Step 1: Place your cursor in the para you want to add a border. After that, click on Format followed by Paragraph styles and then Borders and shading.

Step 2: Select the options according to your preferences and click Apply. A border with the exact parameters you specified will be applied to the paragraph.
