Reddit is a website for community discussions on various topics, from politics and sports to comics and films. The platform is run by moderators called Mods who create and control forums called subreddits to discuss a particular topic. Mods are volunteers who are regular users of the platform. They can have rules and guidelines in place to define how other community members or users of the subreddit can interact with each other and what they can and cannot post.
Being a community-led, interactive website and app, there are chances you might come across unsavoury users on Reddit whom you wish to block. It is also possible that someone might block you. Let’s look at how to block someone and how to know if someone has blocked you on Reddit.
Can you tell if you have been blocked on Reddit?
You can tell someone has blocked you on Reddit if you cannot directly interact with them, barring a few exceptions. That means you won’t be able to see their profile, nor will you be able to message them, reply, or comment on their posts.
There are a few exceptions to this if both you and the Reddit user who blocked you are part of group chats or if they are a participant in the communities moderated by you.
- Group Chats – If you were in a group chat with someone who blocked you, you can still see and interact with them via the group chat.
- Moderator – If a user from your community has blocked you, as a moderator, you can still see, reply to, and take action on posts, comments, live chat messages and chat channel messages they make in your communities. You can access their profile to see their history only for the communities you moderate.
- However, you can’t directly message, send chat requests, or mod-mail from your account to the person who blocked you unless you reply as the subreddit in mod-mail. Modmail is a messaging system moderators use to interact with their community members and other Reddit users.

How to block someone on Reddit?
There are two ways to block someone on Reddit. You can either go to their profile or block them from your user settings.
Block users from their Reddit profile
- From your iOS/Android device, go to the top right corner of the user’s profile you want to block and Tap. Select Block user.
- From the browser, go to reddit.com. Navigate to the user’s profile you want to block. Click More Options under their avatar. Select Block User from the options that appear.

- Open the Reddit app from your iOS/Android device and go to Settings. Tap your username, then navigate to Blocking and Permissions < Managed Blocked Accounts. Look up the username of the person you want to block. Tap Block.
- From the browser, go to reddit.com. Go to User Settings > Safety & Privacy. Look up the username of the person you want to block under People You’ve Blocked. Search for their username and add them to your Blocked Users list.
