Indian edtech firm SkilloVilla suffers alleged data breach

A threat actor has claimed responsibility for leaking a massive trove of user data from SkilloVilla, a Bengaluru-based edtech platform. The compromised dataset consists of two compressed archives — one measuring 29.2 GB and another 4.6 GB.

These files contain sensitive user details, including user IDs, names, mobile numbers, email addresses, and many other undisclosed information.

Although the exact number of affected users remains unclear, the size of the data leak suggests that the number may be quite high. Also, data leaks can lead to additional cyber threats such as phishing and other cyber frauds such as digital arrests.

SkilloVilla was founded by Ronak Agrawal, Rajat Agrawal, and Deepak Kharol and is backed by Kunal Bahl, Rohit Bansal, Harsh Chawla, Miten Sampat, Varun Alagh and Upsparks and Aakrit Vaish.

The edtech firm focuses on courses such as Python for Data Science, Data Analytics and Statistics using Python, Machine Learning using Python, Excel: Beginner to Advanced, and SQL: Beginner to Advanced. Their Excel: Beginner to Advanced course has over 34K students and is one of the most popular courses.

It seems that threat actors have begun to target edtech platforms. In January 2025, Wissenhive was targeted by the FunkSec ransomware group. The threat actors claimed to possess over 32,000 records containing sensitive data from 2021 to 2022.

In December of last year, FunkSec claimed responsibility for a cyberattack on QuizTarget, an online platform specializing in interactive quizzes and surveys.

Government agencies such as Madhya Pradesh’s State Child Protection Authority (SCPS), telecommunications infrastructure company Indus Towers, and C-Edge Technologies, a key service provider for cooperative and small banks, insurance company Let’s Secure, Bethany Hospital and fintech firm Signzy have all fallen victim to various levels of cyber attacks.

India is emerging as a hub of cyberattacks with the country facing over 369 million cyberattacks in 2024.
