Instagram has started testing a new feature to help people discover and support social movements on Instagram.
The new feature aims to make it easier for people to explore and find social movements they care about and either spread the word or create a fundraiser.
The Meta-owned platform with over two billion MAUs is rolling out a few hashtags around popular social movements like #BlackLivesMatter, #womensrights and #climatecrisis.
The company has also consulted with several organisations, including the NAACP, GLAAD, AAJC, Hispanic Heritage Foundation and Illuminative, to select the initial hashtags.
People can discover social movements on Instagram through hashtags associated with the movements. Once on a hashtag page, they’ll see a new ‘Support’ button, which will direct them to a pop-up where they can either ‘Spread the word’ by sending the hashtag through a DM or ‘Create a fundraiser’ for the movement by raising money for a nonprofit associated with the cause. According to the company, 100% of donations will go to these NGOs.
“People often come to Instagram to make their voices heard, elevate causes and bring communities together. They’re eager to support causes they hear about on Instagram and are always looking for new ways to take action,” Instagram announced on Monday.
