Instagram has introduced a new feature that enables users to hear the descriptions of photos via the screen reader when they use Feed, Explore and Profile. This feature is targeted towards those who are visually impaired.
The automatic alternative text feature allows users to hear descriptions of photos. It uses object recognition technology, which generates a description of the images that could be read by screen readers. This helps users to hear a list of items that the image may contain.
The feature is not only aimed at users but also at content creators. While uploading an image, users can now add custom alternative text that will help people using screen readers to understand your content by hearing the description.
“With more than 285 million people in the world who have visual impairments, we know there are many people who could benefit from a more accessible Instagram. These are just first steps toward creating a more accessible Instagram,” Instagram stated.
