Chegg, a subscription-based online learning platform, has become a popular resource for students seeking academic help. However, with its growing popularity, questions about its legitimacy and potential downsides have also emerged.
This article discusses what Chegg is, potential concerns with Chegg and whether it is a scam to give better clarity.
What is Chegg?
Chegg, founded in 2006, began primarily as a textbook rental service, aiming to alleviate the financial burden on students grappling with exorbitant textbook prices. Over the years, it evolved into a comprehensive educational platform offering various services, including homework help, tutoring, test preparation, and internship placements.

Potential concerns
- Subscription costs and hidden fees: Some people complain that Chegg’s subscription fees might be too high, especially for students with limited funds. They’ve also complained about unexpected fees and subscriptions renewing automatically, which can surprise users. Chegg needs to be clear about how much its services cost and what you’re signing up for. However, Chegg has different subscription plans, so there are options for different budgets. Before signing up, users should be careful and read through all the terms and conditions.
- Customer support: Some people have said they’re unhappy with Chegg’s customer service. They’ve had trouble getting help with problems and haven’t been able to get answers quickly. Customer service is really important when using a website; if it’s not good, it can make the whole experience bad. Chegg needs to ensure they’re helping customers quickly and fixing any issues. That way, people will keep trusting them and using their services.
- Data Privacy Concerns: As education becomes increasingly digital, concerns about data privacy and security have become prominent. Users entrust Chegg with sensitive information, including personal details and academic records, raising valid concerns about data protection practices. To safeguard user data against unauthorised access or misuse, Chegg must uphold stringent security measures and adhere to privacy regulations.

Is Chegg a scam?
Chegg is a legitimate company offering various services like textbook rentals, online tutoring, and access to a vast library of course materials and solved problems.
Chegg got a 100 trust score on Scamadvisor and is considered to be safe to use, but BBB gave it a rating of 1.03 stars, which is not good.
Chegg operates in two main areas.
- Firstly, there is Chegg Tutors, which offers various student services, such as study materials, scholarship details, college searches, and, most importantly, tutoring.
- Secondly, there are Chegg Books, which handles textbook sales and rentals.
Interestingly, if you look at complaints on the BBB website, you’ll find that most of them are directed towards Chegg Books, not Chegg Tutors.
