Microsoft rolls out mobile apps for its Designer AI image generator

After being available online since its debut almost a year ago, Microsoft’s Designer AI image generator (formerly known as Bing Image Creator) is now getting apps for Android and iOS. The apps will be available as free downloads on their respective platforms.

Redmond also announced that it’ll be adding Designer to more apps, and if you’re using Windows Insiders, you might already spot it in Microsoft Photos. The addition will allow users to edit their photos with Designer using an “Edit with Designer” button, providing access to features like generative erase, background replacements, colour pop, auto crop, and text/markup features, among others.

For those needing extra help, the Designer will come with prompt templates with ideas, styles, descriptions, and the ability to share them with friends or other creators. Custom stickers for social and messaging apps are also on the board — with a simple description, you can make emojis, clip art, wallpapers (similar to Google Pixel’s AI wallpaper generator), monograms, avatars, and more, claims the company.

Microsoft is quite late to the party here, as Google has already implemented similar features into Android. For those using Pixels, features like generative erase, colour pop, background replacements, and more have already become staples, so the Windows maker will have a tough time getting smartphone users to pick the tool up, especially Android users.

With Apple releasing similar AI features in iOS 18 during WWDC 24, the iOS side of Redmond’s expected userbase also looks somewhat content.

All the new features in Microsoft’s AI image tool also don’t come free. At the time of writing, you get 15 free daily boosts to help generate images or designs faster, with a subscription to CoPilot Pro bringing the number of boosts up to 100. Microsoft’s implementation isn’t perfect, but the ease with which Designer can be accessed in Edge, Word, and PowerPoint means there’s potential for the tool actually to get picked up by users.
