Microsoft investigating OneDrive freezing issue on macOS Sequoia

Microsoft has acknowledged a critical issue impacting OneDrive on macOS Sequoia, Apple’s latest operating system. The glitch causes macOS applications to hang or freeze when users attempt to open or save files stored within OneDrive, particularly affecting the Desktop and Documents folders.

Microsoft has confirmed it is actively investigating the issue, aiming to identify the root cause and develop a permanent fix.

The problem affects macOS users who rely on OneDrive for file storage and cloud syncing.

“Opening of saving files within Desktop or Documents folders can cause the file’s app to freeze. This occurs on macOS 15,” Microsoft stated in a support document release.

Until a solution is released, Microsoft has provided a temporary workaround that involves manually force quitting the OpenAndSavePanelService — a process that hangs due to the issue — through macOS’s Activity Monitor.

The company advises users experiencing frozen applications during file saving or opening to follow these steps:

This isn’t the first time OneDrive has faced issues on macOS.
  • Open Activity Monitor: Accessible via the Application > Utilities folder or through Spotlight.
  • Locate OpenAndSavePanelService: In Activity Monitor’s search bar, enter ‘OpenAndSavePanelService.’ The process may show high CPU usage or be labelled as ‘No response.’
  • Force quit: Select the process, click the X button in the Activity Monitor’s top menu, and choose ‘Force Quit.’

Additionally, users are advised to restart OneDrive after completing these steps and save files to alternate folders outside of Desktop, Documents, or OneDrive to avoid recurring freezes.

Microsoft suggests a similar workaround for users encountering this issue when opening files from OneDrive. The tech giant has advised affected users to move files from Desktop or Documents to other folder locations, which can help bypass the glitch.

As BleepingComputer notes, this isn’t the first compatibility challenge for the OneDrive application on Apple devices. In 2023, Microsoft addressed the ‘A different version of the OneDrive app is already connected to this account’ issue that appeared when the user attempted to run both the App Store and standalone versions of OneDrive simultaneously.

For now, Microsoft has yet to provide a timeline for a permanent fix, though users are advised to monitor OnceDrive’s support page for updates.
