Day one of the Mobile World Congress saw some unique products and designs, including a Xiaomi automobile, transparent laptops, and smartwatches that can work for more than three days without charging.
Here’s what the day two of MWC has to offer. The second day saw a few foldable phones: a new budget phone from Nothing, a flip phone by Nubia, and an AI Glass by OPPO.
Samsung Cling Band
Samsung has unveiled the Cling Band phone concept. This device features a flexible OLED screen and can transition between a smartphone and a smartwatch.
When in candy bar mode, the Cling Band resembles a conventional smartphone, boasting a thin form factor, a bezel-less front screen, and a rear camera. The device is equipped with essential features such as a USB Type-C port and a bottom loudspeaker.
Notably, a groove-like structure supports the flexible screen when the device is bent. In addition to the real camera, this mode reveals a heart rate monitor, positioning the device as a health-tracking powerhouse when worn on the wrist where users can monitor their heart rate and other health metrics.
OPPO Air Glass 3
OPPO has taken the wraps off its prototype for the next generation of assisted reality glasses — the OPPO Air Glass 3. The device will integrate with OPPO’s AndesGPT model via a smartphone.
Weighing 50 grams, the Air Glass 3 boasts a self-developed resin waveguide with a refractive index of 1.70. The display brightness uniformity exceeding 50% and a peak eye brightness surpassing 1,000 ensure a viewing experience akin to conventional glasses.
One of the key features of the device is the ability to comprehend various data types, including text, images, video, and audio, through multimodal AI technology. Moreover, the glasses will include a reverse sound field technology which is an open acoustic design with four microphones.
Nothing Phone (2a)
Nothing has teased its budget smartphone Phone (2a) at the Mobile World Congress 2024. The smartphone made its public debut in a glass box allowing people to see the design and glyphs.
The main USP of Nothing phones has been the background glyphs and the company placed three glyphs around the camera island. The rear panel showcased a dual-camera horizontal setup.
The phone is set to launch on March 5 and all the details will be revealed then.
Nubia Flip 5G
Nubia has officially entered the foldable smartphone market with its latest release, the Nubia Flip 5G. The device boasts a 6.9-inch foldable OLED display with a high 120 Hz refresh rate and is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 SoC.
The smartphone will feature a 4,310 mAh battery and will support fast charging of 33 W. For photography enthusiasts, the phone features a 50 MP dual camera with a 16 MP front beauty camera for selfies.
Nubia Flip 5G will offer an expanded storage of 128 to 256 GB alongwith 6GB to 8GB RAM.
Motorola’s Rollable Concept phone
Motorola also introduced a bendable phone at the MWC 2024. However, the concept phone is significantly different from other foldable smartphones. Unlike foldables that essentially function as traditional phones with a flexible display, Motorola envisions a wearable phone that wraps around the wrist, blurring the lines between a smartphone and a smartwatch.
The concept phone boasts a 6.9-inch screen paired with a bendable, woven-fabric back material with an accompanying wristband magnetically attached to the phone, effectively transforming it into a bracelet.
Motorola deployed a foldable pOLED display and a unique arrangement of smaller batteries, forming a backbone for the device to bend. Despite being labelled as a proof-of-concept, the company isn’t planning to for an immediate market release.
