The developers of NordVPN, a globally known VPN service, launched a new identity theft protection service called NordProtect. It utilises user-friendly features created with security expertise to guard consumer identity.
Users who have fallen victim to identity theft can receive reimbursement of up to $1 million for expenses related to restoring their identity, including legal costs and lost wages. NordProtect is only available to NordVPN Prime plan users in the United States at the time of writing. “You can have all of the necessary tools for cybersecurity installed, but one careless click can end up giving your identity away to cyber criminals,” Tomas Sinicki of Nord Security told Candid.Technology.
NordProtect monitors the dark web and notifies people when their sensitive information has been exposed. This includes credentials, phone numbers, social security numbers and other identity assets. The service sends immediate cybersecurity threat alerts ranging from company-wide data leaks to stolen accounts. The secure credit monitoring feature provides users with individual monthly credit scores and alerts them about any suspicious activity.
Cyber extortion protection grants financial help up to $100,000 and professional help on navigating the situation if a user becomes a target of a cyber extortion attack. The fund covers the cost of assistance by an expert and payments made in response to threats concerning deletion and release of the victim’s information and restriction of access to their data or devices.
A personal data removal service called Incogni is also available with specific NordVPN service bundles for users worldwide. Sinicki said, “Identity theft is a global problem, and its frequency is on the rise, which is why enhancing current features and adding new tools to NordProtect is a continuous effort.”
The company plans to launch NordProtect in more markets and as a standalone product in the first half of 2025. NordVPN started working on the identity theft protection service in late 2023 amidst the launch of cyber protection and cyber insurance benefits in the US and Europe, respectively.
Along with NordProtect, NordVPN offers services such as dedicated IP, double VPN, and Onion Over VPN servers to enhance online privacy and ensure no tracking. Additionally, the company provides Threat Protection Pro, a tool that blocks websites, trackers, and ads and scans downloads for malware.
