Artificial intelligence giant OpenAI and leading social media platform Reddit have announced a strategic partnership. This collaboration aims to integrate advanced AI capabilities into Reddit while allowing OpenAI to utilise Reddit’s extensive data to train its models.

The partnership will leverage OpenAI’s advanced language models to simplify Reddit’s content and provide users with new, AI-powered tools. OpenAI’s tools, including ChatGPT, can tap into Reddit’s real-time, structured data by accessing Reddit’s Data API.

This will enable ChatGPT to provide more accurate and dynamic responses, particularly on recent and trending topics.

On the other hand, for Reddit, this means introducing OpenAI-powered features expected to improve content discovery and community interactions, offering users more personalised and insightful experiences.

With this partnership, Reddit moderators can benefit the most. These new AI-driven tools are designed to streamline community management so Reddit moderators can use them to improve their management and foster healthy conversations.

“We are thrilled to partner with Reddit to enhance ChatGPT with uniquely timely and relevant information, and to explore the possibilities to enrich the Reddit experience with AI-powered features,” said Brad Lightcap, OpenAI COO.

Additionally, OpenAI will support Reddit as an advertising partner, opening new avenues for targeted ad campaigns within the Reddit ecosystem and further increasing the social media platform’s revenue.

The companies have not announced the exact financial conditions of the deal.

The deal is expected to diversify Reddit’s income stream.

This deal follows a host of lawsuits against OpenAI for unauthorised data scraping. In 2023, The New York Times initiated a lawsuit against the company, alleging that the GPT platform produces its news pieces verbatim.

In February 2024, several digital news platforms, including The Intercept, Alter Net, and Raw Story, filed a similar lawsuit against OpenAI. In May, eight newspapers, including New York Daily News, Chicago Tribune, Orange County Register, and Sun Sentinel, among others, filed another lawsuit against OpenAI for copyright infringement.

To avoid these lawsuits, OpenAI began partnering with media publishing houses such as the Financial Times, Associated Press, Axel Springer, Le Monde, and Prisa Media to access their content.

Large language models (LLMs) train on an extensive data set to provide a clear and concise reply. In April, it was reported that OpenAI used over a million hours of YouTube video transcript to train GPT-4.

As these models upgrade over time, they will need more training data. While AI can help streamline workflows, it raises concerns about individual data protection and privacy.
