Starlink, owned by Elon Musk, has launched the Starlink Mini to the general public in the United States at $599. Previously, the device was only available as an add-on for existing Residential subscribers.
Touted by Musk as a game-changer, the Starlink Mini integrates the dish and WiFi router into a single, weatherproof package. The device, which is about the size of a laptop, is significantly smaller and more power-efficient than previous Starlink kits.
It can be powered by a USB-PD power bank capable of 100W, making it ideal for users who rely on portable power sources during travel.
The Starlink Mini hardware costs $599 and has two service options: Regional and Mini Roam. The Regional plan costs $150 per month and offers unlimited portable data within North America, with the option to pay per gigabyte for in-motion use. This plan is ideal for users who need constant connectivity without worrying about data caps.
Travellers with less extensive data requirements might consider the more affordable option, which costs $50 monthly. This plan provides 50 GB of data that can be used stationary or mobile across the continent.
If needed, customers can purchase extra data on a per-gigabyte basis. A key advantage of both plans is the ability to suspend service when not in use, making them particularly suitable for those who travel seasonally or live a nomadic lifestyle part-time.
According to the Starlink support page, the Starlink Mini is available with the regional plan in Colombia, El Salvador, Guatemala, and Panama. In the United States, the device is available with the Mini Roam and Regional plan.
In April 2024, news reports emerged that Starlink tightened enforcement on the unauthorised use of the device, disrupting services in several countries.
