Snapchat is a rather popular messaging app, especially amongst teenagers; the app gamifies messaging and gives its users an incentive to keep their existing interactions going and increase these interactions and use the app more.
One such incentive on Snapchat is maintaining a snap streak with someone. You start a snap streak by snapping each other consecutively for three days, with the duration between snaps being not more than 24 hours. Once you start, you’ve got to keep sending snaps to each other every 24 hours; otherwise, the streak will break.
Snapchat is famous for its emojis to convey different things and Snapchat streak emojis are no different. If you’re looking to change your existing streak emoji, check out this detailed guide on how to do so. But if you’re seeing an hourglass icon next to your streak, and are confused as to what it means, read on to find out.

What does the Snapchat Hourglass mean?
If you start seeing an hourglass emoji next to your streak, it means that your snap streak is about to expire, and you should snap the other person as soon as possible. The emoji appears after about 20 hours of you not interacting with a friend. It indicates that you need to snap each other soon; otherwise, the streak will reset. Note that text messages don’t’ count as snaps.
Now it isn’t exactly known for how long the hourglass emoji stays once it appears, but you can expect your streak to end in two to four hours once you see the hourglass. In some cases, it might go higher, but once the timer’s up, your streak is gone for good.
So once you see the hourglass emoji, it’s a good idea to send a snap to the other person immediately. However, as mentioned before, not all forms of interaction on Snapchat counts as a snap.
Snaps are images or videos you take using the primary Snapchat camera. Any pictures or videos you take and send will count towards your snap streak; however, any text or voice messages will not.
The following interactions also don’t count towards snap streaks:
- Snapchat stories.
- Spectacles
- Memories
- Group chats
- Any media sent from the camera roll.
