In a move that signals Elon Musk’s continued push to transform X into an all-encompassing platform, the social network now allows Android users to make audio and video calls.

One of the X engineers working on the project, Enrique, shared details about the feature, indicating that it will be accessible to Android users through an upcoming app update.

There have been rumours about the audio and video calls on the platform since June last year when X introduced DM replies.

CEO Linda Yaccarino had initially unveiled plans to introduce video calls to the platform in August 2023, with the feature being rolled out to iOS users in October. Now, with an Android expansion, X aims to further solidify its position in the social networking space.

The new functionality comes with a caveat: While any user can receive a call, only paid subscribers have the privilege of placing a call. This move aligns with X’s strategy of offering exclusive features to its premium user base.

Users can manage their calling preferences through the Settings menu, specifically under Privacy and safety and then Direct Messages.

Within this section, individuals can toggle the option to enable or disable audio and video calling. Additionally, users have the flexibility to control who can initiate calls, with options including people in their address book, those they follow, and verified users. The customisation extends to the ability to select multiple options from these categories.

X has maintained its ambitious stance, aspiring to become an “everything app.” Recently, the company outlined its vision for 2024, which encompasses the launch of peer-to-peer payments, the introduction of new xAI-powered features like “show dissimilar posts” and the unveiling of additional advertising products to entice marketers.

However, amidst X’s expansive goals, there have been reports of advertisers defecting from the platform. It will be interesting to see how Musk achieves his goal of expanding X into an all-encompassing platform.
