Adobe is adding five new AI tools to the Photoshop desktop beta app, powered by Firefly Image 3. These tools include Reference Image, Text to Image with Generate Image, Generate Background, Generate Similar, and Enhance Detail, which will be released completely later this year.
Among the key highlights is the Reference Image tool, which allows users to upload images that inspire AI-generated designs by analysing style and colour elements. This feature streamlines the design process, offering users a more intuitive way to create visually appealing outputs without the need for manual tweaking.
To ensure ethical usage, Adobe emphasises that users must have the appropriate rights to the reference images they upload. The company is implementing measures such as ownership flagging and a ‘do not train’ tag under the Content Authenticity Initiative to protect intellectual property and prevent unauthorised image usage.
Despite these precautions, Adobe assures users that the referencing tool remains for commercial use, distinguishing Firefly from other generative AI models.

In addition to Reference Image, the Photoshop beta app introduces several other generative AI tools to expand creative possibilities. Generate Background is designed for creating and replacing background images, particularly useful for product photography.
Similarly, Enhance Detail enhances image clarity and sharpness, while Generate Similar and Generate Image enable users to produce content based on existing images or text descriptions.

Adobe Firefly Image 3 model, available in global beta, delivers photorealistic results with improved lighting, positioning, and attention to detail. Notably, users can input text prompts to produce images based on the text.
“Through new Firefly-powered features in Photoshop, we are bringing ideation and creation closer together and making editing images both more powerful and approachable so everyone can realize their creative vision,” said Ashley Still, senior VP, Creative Product Group at Adobe.
Aside from generative AI enhancements, Adobe has integrated new standard tools into Photoshop to streamline workflows. The Adjustment Brush enables non-destructive changes, such as colour adjustments to specific image areas, while Adjustment Presets offer quick image transformations using filters.
Additionally, the improved Font Browser provides real-time access to over 25,000 fonts from Adobe’s cloud within the Photoshop application, enhancing font selection and design flexibility.
Adobe is integrating AI into several products, including Acrobat and Premiere Pro. In February 2024, Adobe unveiled AI tools to generate music from text prompts with Project Music GenAI Control.
