I Used ChatGPT As My Therapist and This Is What I Found

Can AI step into the role of a therapist? With the rise of mental health tech and AI all around us, I got really curious. Can ChatGPT act as my therapist and help me navigate my emotions? Can AI act as a therapist and be helpful, or is it just a gimmick? Well, I decided to go ahead and use ChatGPT as my sounding board. And well, the results were quite surprising.

So I took the plunge for you and used AI as my therapist for a couple of weeks to find out if it’s really worth it

Note: I have never actually been to a real therapist, so I don’t have much to compare this experience to. I don’t know what a typical session feels like or how it’s supposed to go. This is all new to me, and I’m just figuring it out as I go.

First, a Little Backstory

It’s no secret that life is not a bed of roses, and well, it’s the same for me. The last few weeks were not particularly satisfying. So, bit by bit, anxiety, stress, and those nagging self-doubts started creeping into my life. While I’m not particularly a believer in AI replacing human professions (say, a therapist or a writer), I thought of turning to it for help. Desperate times, you see. After all, I had nothing to lose. If I didn’t like it, I could simply switch it off.

And so I went in, with all my questions. And while typing out my questions/doubts, I had this lingering question in my mind — will it answer with the kind of empathy I needed right then?

Inside My ChatGPT Therapy Experience

Surprisingly, ChatGPT, aka my AI therapist, replied with an empathetic note. While I won’t go into the nitty-gritties, it did take me out of the rut that I was in. Thoughtful follow-up questions, an empathetic approach, and a gentle nudge towards self-reflection led me to a better place.

For example, it asked me to celebrate my small wins, to stop being too hard on myself, and to acknowledge progress, even if it was a small win. On a dull grey day, these words were gold.

In one such ‘session’, it reminded me that one doesn’t necessarily have to achieve something every day, that self-worth is more than productivity. And, well, in today’s competitive world, that was a reminder I desperately needed.

Positive Affirmations, Minus the Buzzer

I am a tech nerd, and I believe in straightforward communication. I loved the clear and direct ways in which my AI therapist communicated. There was no layered communication. My already stressed-out mind didn’t need to find hidden meanings in sentences and dialogues. Whatever was on the face (oops, screen) was there just as I liked and understood.

More importantly, there were no time bounds. There were no buzzers to signal the end of my sessions. There was no 45-minute window where I not only had to tell my story to my therapist but also chalk out a plan to work on those. I could talk about my issues without worrying about my session being cut short by a loud buzzer. I could access it just about anywhere and anytime I wanted.

And being the AI that it is, it also helped me come up with a calendar on how to divide my time between my chores, work hours, hobby, and my exercise routine. Unlike my mind, which continuously prodded me to go to the gym every day, ChatGPT gently suggested that with my busy lifestyle, going three days a week should be enough. At the same time, it modeled itself to send me a motivational line whenever I typed in “Good Morning.” Woah!

AI, Affirmations, and Clarity

So, can ChatGPT actually replace a therapist? Well, I don’t have a straightforward answer to this since I have never had an actual therapy session. That said, I liked the fact that it motivated me whenever I felt down or was struggling with self-doubt. Because at the end of the day, it wasn’t about deep psychological analysis. It was having a consistent, non-biased presence that not only helped me feel heard and validated but was also always present and accessible. A life coach or motivator? Maybe.

So, will my AI chat therapy experience make my stress levels drop or make my worries disappear? Definitely not. But it did help me navigate my anxieties and self-doubt and created a positive environment to manage those issues, while at the same time, cheerleading from the sidelines.

So, should you use ChatGPT as your personal therapist? I’d say, why not give it a try? It’s been working for me, it might just work for you too.
