OpenAI announced on Tuesday that the new ChatGPT app is now available for all macOS users, following the initial announcement made in the Spring Update event on May 13, 2024.
Initially, the ChatGPT macOS app was available to Plus subscribers. However, OpenAI has now expanded its availability to all MacOS users. This broader rollout ensures that more users can benefit from ChatGPT’s advanced capabilities without delay.
Once users have installed the ChatGPT app, they can invoke the AI chatbot with a simple keyboard shortcut: Option + Space, a method that will feel intuitive to macOS users accustomed to using Command + Space to launch Spotlight Search. When launched, ChatGPT will appear as an overlay on the screen, presenting a familiar chat interface.
Users can also capture and discuss screenshots directly within the app. Furthermore, the app will open in a compact window where users can ask queries about the on-screen content.
OpenAI’s announcement of the macOS app coincided with the launch of GPT-4o, their flagship generative AI model. GPT-4o stands out for its advanced capabilities, including handling text, speech, and video.
The partnership between OpenAI and Apple is set to deepen further. At the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2024, it was announced that ChatGPT would also be integrated into iPhones and iPads. These integrations, powered by GPT-4o, will allow users to access ChatGPT via Siri and other AI-aided tools like Writing Tools.
These features are expected to be available with the launch of Apple’s latest operating systems later this year.
At the Spring Update event, OpenAI also announced that a Windows-based ChatGPT application is in the pipeline and users can anticipate a launch later this year. With this, OpenAI aims to target almost an entire tech population, further popularising the AI chatbot and gaining the upper hand among the competitors.
