Instagram’s close friend app, Threads, lets you share updates with your closest contacts. But if you’re ready to move on, deleting your Threads account is straightforward, and thankfully, it no longer requires deleting your Instagram account as well.
In the past, deleting your Threads account meant deleting your entire Instagram account since Threads was heavily integrated with Instagram. Thankfully, Meta changed this policy. Now, you can finally delete just your Threads profile.

Before you begin
- Deleting your Threads account is permanent. Once it’s gone, you’ll lose your messages, contacts, and any other data associated with your Threads profile.
- If you think you might want to come back to Threads someday, consider deactivating your account instead. This temporarily hides your profile but allows you to reactivate it later.
Steps to delete your account using the website
To permanently delete your account using the Threads website, follow these steps:
Step 1: Open the Threads website, log in to your account and click on the More icon at the bottom of the icon menu on the left side.
Step 2: In the menu, click on the Settings option.
Step 3: Click on the Account tab and then click on the Deactivate or delete profile option.
Step 4: On the screen, you’ll see a note stating Deactivating your profile is temporary while deleting it is permanent and won’t affect your Instagram account. Click on the Deactivate profile button.
Step 5: Click on the Delete profile button.
Step 6: It will ask you to log in to permanently delete your account, enter the password and click on the Delete Threads profile button.
Steps to delete your account using the mobile app
To delete your Threads account using the mobile app follow the steps below:
- Tap on the Profile icon at the bottom right corner of the screen.
- Tap on the Hamburger icon at the top right corner of the screen.
- In settings, tap on the Account option.
- Tap on the Deactivate or delete profile option.
- Tap on the Delete profile button.
- You have to log in to permanently delete your account, enter the password and tap on the Delete Threads profile button.
Important Notes
- If you change your mind, you have 30 days to cancel the deletion request. Just log back into your Threads account before the 30 days are up.
- After deletion, it can take up to 90 days for your Threads data to be completely removed from Meta’s servers.
- Once the deletion is complete, you won’t be able to create a new Threads profile with the same Instagram account for 90 days.
